Day 2 – 07/04/2017 – A breath of fresh air, an amazing waiter, the smile of a stranger, acknowledged and mysterious nature

Second round…

What surprised me?

  • I was surprised how nice it was to just sit outside, do nothing in my garden. I usually prefer to stay inside and work on something at my desk. At the end of the day, I usually feel some cabin fever growing inside of me. You would think that I would remember to go outside the next day to oxygenate my brain well no, I’m so focused on work that I don’t take the time to go out. So for once, I broke my routine and got a nice surprise.
  • We went to a Greek restaurant with my family and we had amazing service thanks to an amazing waiter. We ask him to turn down the music, in a few minutes it was done. Our order was a bit late, he proactively apologized and when our glass of water would get empty, he was there to fill them back up. It is not so much what he did as to how he did: you could sense he truly enjoyed what he was doing and he was fully dedicated to it. We felt like we were in good hands and it made our experience in this restaurant much more enjoyable. I even walked out of the restaurant leaving my phone on the table, he ran after me to bring it back to me. Needless to say that he got a good tip from us. Could it be what some call the law of attraction?

What touched my heart?

  • The smile of a stranger and the beauty that emanated from it. Sometimes it feels good to see someone smiling genuinely, it raises up your spirit and encourage you to do the same: smile! It’s funny because I don’t usually notice this type of this. Could this be linked to this happiness experimentation? It also gave me the impression that I was connected to this stranger and it felt good.
  • My daughter Rose acknowledged me as being a “playful Daddy”. I love games since I was a child, I enjoy them because it is an opportunity to step out of serious adulthood. Anyway, it was funny and unexpected to be acknowledged by my daughter like that. It touched me that she knew a part of my true self.

What inspired me?

  • I am noticing it is more difficult for me to find something to be inspired about during my day. What came to mind is the beauty of my garden and in particular the beautiful green color of my grass. As if this natural beauty spoke to me in ways I’m not aware of.

Day 1 – 06/04/2017 – Tasty meat, going beyond anger, a big hug and who we truly are.

Here we go!

What surprised me today?

  • I had an amazingly tasty dinner: I was surprised how tasty the meat was. It may sound trivial and yet food is one of those simple pleasures of life which is really important to me. If there is no pleasure in what I eat, I have a tendency to feel empty and that is when I start to snack on chocolate or salty depending on the moment.
  • My daughter came back yelling from the park where she was playing with her friends. She was hysterical, slamming doors, a real tornado. Usually, I yell because I don’t understand what is going on and get frustrated because I don’t like the situation . This time I miraculously put aside my automatic response of anger and was able to connect with her. I think what did the trick is that I accepted the situation as it was (instead of complaining mentally that this was not supposed to happen) which allowed me to focusing on her with empathy, listen with my heart and ask questions

What touched me today?

  • I asked my daughter to hug me because I felt a bit down. Usually I ignore my needs and therefore don’t act upon it. For some reason, I did listen to myself and I felt like a hug. My daughter is a great hugger :-). When I received her hug, it felt surprisingly good inside – not like a usual hug. It may be that my wanting a hug made it special. I felt like it healed something inside of me.

What inspired me today?

  • I watched an inspiring video from Laurent Gounelle in French. It was a nice reminder that we are not our possessions, we are not our beauty, we are not our job, we are not even our genetics nor our name. Who we are goes beyond all this.

Technic #2 to connect to yourself and your purpose

Sit in silence and see what happens…

night garden

During the day or at night, preferably in nature if you have a garden or a park close by, spend 3 minutes or more in silence.

  • Just sit there,
  • Listen to the sounds,
  • Watch what you see,
  • Feel what you feel,
  • Accept that you don’t know what is going to happen,
  • Let go and relax,
  • Focus on your body senses so that your rambling mind recedes in the back,
  • Open up and welcome the present moment.

The trick is to spend this time with no expectation, no intention just for the pleasure of being present without having anything to do nor to think about.

After a little while, this technic is supposed to create space within so you can connect to your deeper self and let your deepest desires, your purpose, your life mission emerge from within.

Technic #1 for a new pair of eyes

What you focus on, grows…

Marcel Proust quote

Spend 10 minutes a night with your little notebook. Sit down with the book and reflect on your day going backwards:

  • I just had dinner
  • I was driving home
  • Before that I had a meeting with Mrs. X
  • Rewind your day as if it was a videotape until you reach the morning when you got out of bed in the morning.

Do this process three times

  1. the first time you are going to ask yourself: what surprised me today? As soon as you find anything that answers that question, anything at all, you write it down briefly in your little book.
  2. Then you start your review again from the back asking yourself: what touched my heart today? As soon as you find anything that answers that question you write it down.
  3. Then you start your review again and ask this time: what inspired me today? As soon as you find something that answers that question you write it down.

Then you are done for the day.

Suggestion: look back at your day as if you were a novelist, a journalist or even poet. You need to look for the stories.
